Way too many students in Los Angeles aren't getting the education they deserve. Students deserve better schools and parents deserve to know how their children's schools are doing and what their options are. That's why more than 5,000 parents from across LA came out on a Saturday morning to stand up and speak out. Thanks to all of you, it was truly an incredible kick-off to our campaign to make sure our elected leaders put public education front and center.
Parents stood up on Feb. 4, 2012 to demand:
- High-quality schools in every neighborhood for all public school students!
- Quality space to learn for all public school students!
- Equal funding for all public school students!
- That parent voices are heard!
At the rally, we asked our elected representatives to sign on to the "Schools We Can Believe In" Pledge.
Speakers at the Rally
We heard from several leaders who are committed to improving public schools, as well as some inspiring educators and parents. Univision Anchor Gabriela Teissier, who is a charter school parent, did an incredible job emceeing our event.
- Antonio Villaraigosa, Mayor of Los Angeles
- Corri Ravare, Executive Director of Families That Can
- Monica Garcia, LAUSD Board President
- Dr. John Deasy, LAUSD Superintendent
- Connie Rivera, Parent, Alliance for College Ready Public Schools
- Ana Ponce, Founder of Camino Nuevo Charter Academies
- Angelina Saenz, Teacher, Aldama Elementary
- Yolie Flores, Executive Director of Communities for Teaching Excellence

More than 100 different charter schools participated in the event. See a map showing all the schools that were there.
Our Partners
We worked with many with other local non-profits and community groups that are passionate about improving our public schools to make this rally a success and we will continue to work with them to engage parents on these critical issues. Click on their logos to learn more!
What's next?
There are many important elections coming up, including LA Mayor, City Council, and School Board in 2013. Today is the kick-off of a year-long campaign to ensure that improving our public schools is at the top of the agenda for all elected officials and candidates. In the months to come, we'll be inviting you to more events and asking you take action and reach out to the elected officials in your area.
What can you do right now?
Tell your friends and family!
Share your story and tell them why you came to the rally today and why you support charter public schools.
Invite elected representatives to visit your school!
Nothing has more impact on decision-makers than hearing from parents, students and teachers first-hand. Work with your school principal to plan an event and don't forget to invite the community to your campus for National Charter Schools Week, May 6-12, 2012.
